Case Studies

Niagara Frontier Consulting Services

As a company that specialized in environmental remediation (i.e. hazardous waste disposal, asbestos inspection, lead-based paint assessments, etc.), NFCS needed a logo that better represented their products and services, as well as their philosophy of providing creative solutions.

We in turn provided them with a creative solution for their logo. One so fitting that it not only captured the essence of their work but also dictated the look of two subsequent brochures and a website.

Read on to see how we did it.

The Idea

In 1899, Charles H. Duell, the Director of the U.S. Patent Office, said, "Everything that can be invented has been invented". Clearly, he was not an out-of-the-post-office-box thinker.

At Flynn & Friends, "creative stuff" is our livelihood. But, contrary to what many people may think, it doesn't always mean coming up with never-been-done-before ideas. It does, however, mean the ability to see connections between things that, at first glance, may seem totally unrelated.

For this particular project, our inspiration came from the I Ching, or Book of Changes, a 3,000-year-old Chinese oracle. Since ancient times it has provided readers with insight into their own lives and guidance for the future.

The book consists of 64 hexagrams, each of whose combinations of six broken and / or unbroken lines has a dynamic meaning that offers a window into the forces of life at that time. It operates on the principle of synchronicity – the concept that the microcosm of the moment in which the I Ching's hexagram is cast is related to the macrocosm of the larger forces of life at that time.

One hexagram in particular resonated with us. Called "Ku", it translates as "Work On What Has Been Spoiled". In other words, what has been spoiled through man's faults can be redeemed through man's work – a concept that truly captured the nature of NFCS' work in environmental renewal.

And so an idea for a logo was born.

In Print

We took the idea a step further in NFCS' capabilities piece. Building on the logo, we used four other hexagrams from the I Ching to illustrate the main services NFCS offered. The copy gave specific, real world examples of how the Chinese symbols related to these services.

One of the four services related to asbestos abatement. For this, we incorporated the hexagram translated as "Turning Point", which indicates that after a time of decay, a "turning point" is reached wherein the old is discarded and the new is introduced. The copy on this particular page discussed how NFCS helped its clients, from nationally registered landmarks to school districts to federal buildings, discard the old and introduce the new through their asbestos inspection and site remediation services.

The Point Of All This

Several years later, NFCS reincarnated as a company called Lender Consulting Services (LCS). Thanks to our work for the predecessor company, LCS' owner asked us to come up with a brochure and web site that built on the previous work. The web site is shown here. It also uses the theme of the I Ching to deliver its message.

It's nice to be "re-upped" by a client, an experience we've had any number of times. We believe that the reason behind this is the fact that our ideas truly get people's attention (if you're reading along, we got yours, didn't we?). The logo we created for NFCS and the later work we did for LCS are good examples of that.
